Sleep Fact Countdown: #35

The continuous brain recordings that led to the discovery of REM (rapid eye-movement) sleep were not done until 1953, partly because the scientists involved were concerned about wasting paper.

That was actually because of the little known paper shortage of the early 50's ... trees formed a union and went on strike, something about discrimination. That's why we cut down the rainforest these days. Ever since Title 19 we can't be too selective about which trees we log for paper and which we don't ... gosh darned unions. Ruining this country! Next thing you know homosexual trees will want equal marriage rights and by george, logging the rainforest is one thing, but homosexual tree unions. NO WAY. I draw the line!
