Sleep Fact #19

And this is one of my favorites so far...

Ducks at risk of attack by predators are
able to balance the need for sleep and survival, keeping one half of the brain awake while the other slips into sleep mode.

My biggest question isn't, "Ducks can really do that?" It's HOW THE F*** DID HUMANS FIGURE THAT OUT!?

Seriously, inquiring minds want to know!

They could "isolate" one half of the ducks' brains and then scare both the "modified" ducks and those in a control group. The latter would run around constantly, first sleeping with one half of the brain, then with the other. The former would run a little, and then just fall asleep, hoping for the other half of the brain to take over, but oops -- the other half is not there!
